Bank Reviews

As a number of you may be aware, one of the local banks in Southern California, Indymac, was recently taken over by the FDIC. Since my funds were located at Indymac, I am now considering moving them to another bank, once I have access to them come next week. Although I plan on reviewing websites and talking with other banks about the services they offer, I would really appreciate hearing from FPU class members regarding the banks you use, the quality of customer service you've received at your bank, and the positive and/or negative experiences you've had with a bank. Thanks so much, as this information will be helpful in my decision making process.

We have used many banks over the years. At one point we had accounts open at Wells Fargo, WAMU and
B of A all at the same time! In our opinion all three of these banks have lousy customer service. We stuck with Bank of America because they charge no fees on any of our accounts. We have a personal banker at the Claremont branch who is really nice (Gale), and has been in the industry for 25 years. Wells Fargo is by far the worst, they even charge for online banking ($7.50 a month). I heard WAMU is in big financial trouble so they may be next to bite the dust. We just flat out dislike banks in general but they are a necessary evil.
B of A has really good online banking and it is free.

Hope that helps.

I used to like WAMU, but after they dinged me 3 times in one day at $33 each for a depleted checking account (even though I thought I had overdraft protection and had plenty of money in savings to cover the checks), well, I looked elsewhere. Now, I'm switching to a teacher's credit union. They are conservative, very excellent customer service, helpful with investment advice, willing to meet one-on-one, etc. They pay six percent on summer saver accounts throughout the school year and transfer the funds into my savings each August.
